Kids ace the farm list. Adults stall on fish.

Can you name 100 animals? Ask a child to name animals and the list pours out. Ask an adult the same question with a timer running and the room gets competitive — then quiet. Dog, cat, lion, elephant. Then everyone realizes how few fish and insects they can actually say out loud. This is that playground game grown up, with Wikidata as the referee.

Documentaries make you feel fluent until you have to retrieve the common English name. “I’ve seen that creature” is not the same as typing it. Birds no longer count here — they have their own list: Try: Name 100 Birds. Shared rules: What is the Name 100 challenge?

Species first, Latin last

Everyday names work best: blue whale, red fox, honeybee. Plants are out. Birds are out. Mythical beasts are out. Species names belong on Name 100 Pokémon. Breeds sometimes pass; “dog” and “tiger” are safer than hoping every kennel name is in the graph. Want only kennel names? Try: Name 100 Dog Breeds. Obscure Latin is a worse bet than the name you would use at a zoo.

What counts

  • Type a common English animal name — “blue whale”, “honeybee”. Everyday names beat obscure Latin.
  • Animal taxa in Wikidata count. Birds do not count here — use Name 100 Birds. Plants, mythical beasts, Pokémon, and fictional creatures do not. Breeds sometimes pass; species-level names are safer.
  • Each animal counts once. Repeat names are rejected.
  • No hard cutoff. The timer runs up from your first submit. Hit Finish anytime to lock a score.

How to Play

  1. Type a common English animal name and submit.
  2. We validate animal-related Wikidata entities in real time.
  3. Work toward 100 unique animals. Timer runs up, no hard cutoff.
  4. Share your wildlife quiz result from the Finish screen.

Habitat by habitat

Farm → forest → ocean → desert → insects. After mammals, force a fish pass and an insect pass — those two unlock a surprising number of names you already know and will not volunteer until you decide to look there. Want the sky list? Try: Name 100 Birds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What animals count?

Animal taxa and common animal names in Wikidata, except birds. Everyday English names are safest. Plants, birds, mythical beasts, and fictional creatures are out of scope. For robin, sparrow, and eagle, play Name 100 Birds.

Do breeds count (like “poodle” or “siamese”)?

Sometimes — only if Wikidata has a matching entity our checker accepts. Species-level common names (“dog”, “cat”, “tiger”) are more reliable than every breed name. For a dedicated kennel list, play Name 100 Dog Breeds.

Do insects and sea creatures count?

Yes, if they resolve to accepted animal-related entities (insects, fish, marine mammals, etc.). Try simple names like “octopus”, “honeybee”, or “great white shark”.

Do birds count here?

No. Robin, sparrow, eagle, and other birds belong on Name 100 Birds. This list is the rest of the zoo.

Is there a time limit?

No hard cutoff — timer runs up from 0:00.

Is the Name 100 Animals quiz free?

Yes. Free wildlife naming challenge, no registration.
