Can you name 100 dog breeds?
Everyone can say “dog”. Fewer people can retrieve a hundred breed names with the kennel book closed. The first twenty are living-room furniture: Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd. Then you remember a coat and cannot retrieve the name on the tag.
This is that blank list. Type the breed; Wikidata checks whether it is a dog breed. “Dog” itself belongs on Name 100 Animals. Shared format: What is the Name 100 challenge?.
The breed, not the species
“Poodle” counts. “Dog” does not. Cat breeds do not. A wolf is an animal, not a kennel name. Just finished the wildlife list? Stay in the same habit: Try: Name 100 Animals.
What counts
- Type the common English breed — “Labrador Retriever”, “Poodle”, “Shiba Inu”.
- Dog breeds in Wikidata count. The word “dog” alone does not.
- Each breed once. Another spelling of the same Wikidata entry is rejected.
- No hard cutoff. Timer starts on your first submit. Finish anytime, or the round ends at 100.
How to Play
- Type a dog breed in English and submit.
- We check Wikidata for dog breeds — not every animal name.
- Aim for 100 unique breeds. The timer runs up — no sudden cutoff.
- Hit Finish anytime to share your score.
Kennel groups, then the leftovers
Sweep the living-room list: Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, then terriers, then sighthounds. After the AKC tentpoles, force a pass of Japanese and Mediterranean names. “Dog” fails here — you want the breed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What dog breeds count?
Wikidata entities typed as a dog breed — and some subclasses of that. Use the common English breed name.
Does “dog” count?
No. “Dog” is the species. It belongs on Name 100 Animals. Here you want Labrador, Beagle, Akita.
Is this the same as name 100 animals?
No. Animals is any accepted animal name — dog, tiger, octopus. Dog Breeds is only kennel names. Some breed names may also pass on Animals; this page is the dedicated list.
Do mixed breeds or mutts count?
Only if Wikidata files that exact name as a dog breed. Designer crosses sometimes pass; “mutt” usually fails.
Why was my name rejected?
Often it is just “dog”, a cat breed, a wolf, or a nickname the English label does not use. Try the kennel-club name.
Is there a time limit?
No hard cutoff. Race yourself with an upward-running timer.
Is this challenge free?
Yes. Free in the browser, no signup.
