Can you name 100 birds?

Everyone can say “bird”. Fewer people can retrieve a hundred kinds with the field guide closed. The first twenty are garden furniture: robin, sparrow, eagle. Then you remember a silhouette and cannot retrieve the name on the sign.

This is that blank list. Type the bird; Wikidata checks whether it is a bird taxon. Mammals, fish, and insects belong on Name 100 Animals. Birds do not count on that list; other animals do not count here. Shared format: What is the Name 100 challenge?.

The bird, not the zoo

“Robin” counts. “Sparrow” counts. “Eagle” counts. “Bird” itself does not. A lion belongs on the wildlife list. Just finished the farm and ocean pass? Stay in the same habit: Try: Name 100 Animals.

What counts

  • Type a common English bird name — “robin”, “sparrow”, “eagle”. Everyday names beat obscure Latin.
  • Bird taxa in Wikidata count. Mammals, fish, insects, and the word “bird” do not. Those belong on Name 100 Animals or nowhere.
  • Each bird once. Another spelling of the same Wikidata entry is rejected.
  • No hard cutoff. Timer starts on your first submit. Finish anytime, or the round ends at 100.

How to Play

  1. Type a common English bird name and submit.
  2. We check Wikidata for bird taxa. Other animals fail.
  3. Aim for 100 unique birds. The timer runs up — no sudden cutoff.
  4. Hit Finish anytime to share your score.

Garden, then water, then raptors

Start with backyard names, then waterbirds, then birds of prey. After robin and sparrow, force a pass of ducks, owls, and seabirds. Keep common English names over genus Latin. Finished the sky list? Try Name 100 Animals for everything that is not a bird.

Frequently Asked Questions

What birds count?

Bird taxa and common bird names in Wikidata. Everyday English names like robin, sparrow, and eagle are safest.

Does the word “bird” count?

No. Type a kind of bird. “Bird” itself is the class, not a name on this list.

Do other animals count?

No. Mammals, fish, and insects belong on Name 100 Animals. This list is birds only.

Do mythical birds count?

No. Phoenix and similar belong on the character list if Wikidata files them as characters — not here.

Why was my name rejected?

Often it is another animal, a plant, or a nickname Wikidata does not use. Try the common English name.

Is there a time limit?

No hard cutoff. Race yourself with an upward-running timer.

Is this challenge free?

Yes. Free in the browser, no signup.
